ABN AMRO Hong Kong was established on 1 March 1906 as a banking and deposit taking branch of Nederlandsche Handel-Maatschappij (Netherlands Trading Society or NTS) of Amsterdam. After merging in October 1964 with the Twentsche Bank, NTS was changed to Algemene Bank Nederland (ABN Bank).
ABN Bank was selected by the Chinese government to act as one of the ten official agents for the Bank of China in Hong Kong and maintained relationships with many branches of the state bank on the mainland. After the merger of ABN Bank and Amro Bank on 22 September 1991, the personnel and activities of the local Amro Bank branch (since 1981), were transferred to ABN Bank and ABN AMRO was formed.
